How to prepare for a weight-management consultation in Calgary

A useful first visit starts with your questions, medical information and practical concerns. You do not need to arrive having chosen a medicine or committed to a programme.

Book with the weight clinic

Edgemont Weight Management Clinic is a separate service in the same unit as Edgemont Family Pharmacy. Weight-management consultations are booked through the clinic, rather than the pharmacy’s general appointment system. Use the clinic booking link or call 587-952-2900.

The clinic handles the consultation. The pharmacy can help with dispensing and prescription questions. If you already have a prescription and only need to ask about a refill or availability, say so when you contact the pharmacy. Being clear about the purpose of your call helps you reach the right service.

Prepare a short appointment note

  • Your medication list

List prescriptions, non-prescription medicines and supplements, along with any medication allergies or previous reactions. Include medicines prescribed elsewhere. If you have questions about something you already take, write them down.

  • Your health information

Bring relevant records you already have and ask the clinic whether it needs anything else before the appointment. Do not arrange tests or change medication just to prepare unless your healthcare provider instructs you to do so.

  • Your goals and priorities

Describe what you want help with in your own words. That might include managing a health concern, discussing treatment options or understanding what ongoing support would involve. You can also name topics you find difficult to discuss.

  • Previous experiences

Note any programmes or medicines you have tried, what was useful, and what made it difficult to continue. Include practical issues such as appointment times, cost or support at home, rather than treating the visit as a test you need to pass.

If you have searched for a particular medication

People often arrive with questions after reading about weight-management medicines online. Write down the product name and what you want to understand, but leave the decision about suitability to the consultation. Asking about a medicine does not mean it will be recommended or prescribed.

Useful questions include: What are the options for my circumstances? What are the possible benefits and risks? How would my other medicines affect the decision? What would follow-up involve? This article does not compare products, recommend a drug or provide dosing instructions.

Understand the ongoing cost before committing

  • Consultation and programme fees

Ask what the initial fee covers, what ongoing appointments cost and whether any services are optional. Request a breakdown so you can distinguish clinic fees from medication costs.

  • Medication and supplies

If medication is proposed, ask for its current dispensing cost and whether supplies create a separate expense. Do not assume a programme price includes the prescription.

  • Insurance requirements

Ask your insurer about the specific treatment being considered. Check whether prior authorization or other paperwork is needed and who completes it. The clinic cannot guarantee your insurer will approve a claim.

  • Changes to the plan

Ask how fees and follow-up would work if the treatment plan changes. Knowing the process in advance can help you make a decision that fits your budget.

Leave with a plan you understand

Before the visit ends, ask what happens next, who you should contact with questions and whether another appointment is needed. If a prescription is issued, ask the dispensing pharmacist to explain its use and storage for that specific product. Do not rely on instructions for someone else’s medicine.

If you are not ready to decide, say so. You can ask for clarification about the proposed plan and the information you need to consider it. Preparing for a consultation is about making room for an informed conversation, not arriving with a predetermined treatment.

Common questions

Do I book through the pharmacy or the weight clinic?

Book weight-management consultations through Edgemont Weight Management Clinic. Contact the pharmacy for questions about dispensing or refilling an existing prescription.

Should I choose a medication before my appointment?

No. Bring your questions and any product names you want to discuss. The consultation is the place to assess which options, if any, are appropriate for you.
