Meningococcal vaccine in Calgary
Meningococcal bacteria cause meningococcal disease. There are two kinds of adult vaccine: one for types A, C, Y and W-135, such as Menveo, and one for type B. Wessam Sakr, the pharmacist who owns Edgemont Family Pharmacy, gives them in NW Calgary.

Common questions
Is Menveo the same as the meningitis vaccine?
Menveo is one brand of MenC-ACYW, the vaccine for meningococcal types A, C, Y and W-135. Type B needs a separate vaccine, Men-B.
Do adults need a meningococcal vaccine?
Some do: travellers to higher-risk areas, people with certain health problems such as no working spleen or HIV, close contacts of a case, and some lab workers.
Is the meningococcal vaccine free in Alberta?
It's free in school and for some people at higher risk through public health. It isn't free if you're getting it for travel.
How many doses do I need?
Most people need 1 dose of MenC-ACYW. Men-B depends on your age and why you're getting it, so ask us.
