From MyHealth Alberta. The pharmacist confirms which one fits your record and your trip.

You may already have hepatitis B

Most people born in 1981 or later who went to school in Alberta got the hepatitis B vaccine there. If that's you, you may not need it again, or you may only need hepatitis A.

If you've already had the hepatitis A or B vaccines, you don't need Twinrix. Bring any immunization record you have and we'll work out what's missing.

Check with the pharmacist first if

Either of these may mean you can't have it, so talk to us before you book.

What the days after feel like

Side effects tend to be mild and go away in a few days. Common ones include a sore, red or swollen arm, feeling tired or unwell, a headache, a fever, poor appetite or an upset stomach.

You'll wait in the pharmacy for 15 minutes after the needle, in case of a rare allergic reaction. A cold or other mild illness doesn't stop you having it, but it's best to stay home until you feel better.

Common questions

Where can I get a hepatitis A vaccine in Calgary?

Here, at Edgemont Family Pharmacy in NW Calgary. Book online or call 403-930-5806. If you qualify for it free because of liver problems or another health risk, public health gives it.

What is Twinrix?

Twinrix is one vaccine that protects against both hepatitis A and hepatitis B. Most people need 3 doses over 6 months. People who travel often get it.

How far ahead of my trip should I start?

MyHealth Alberta suggests contacting a travel clinic, your doctor or your pharmacist at least 6 weeks before you travel. Hepatitis B and Twinrix take 6 months to complete, so the earlier the better.

Is the hepatitis B vaccine free in Alberta?

If you were born in 1981 or later and didn't get it in school, you can get it free through public health, not at the pharmacy. It's also free through public health for some people because of their health, work or lifestyle. It isn't free if you're getting it for travel.

How much does the hepatitis A vaccine cost?

You'll see our price when you book. Travel vaccines aren't free in Alberta, so check whether your health insurance covers it.
