Chikungunya vaccine in Calgary
Chikungunya is a virus spread by mosquitoes, and it isn't currently found in Canada. Two vaccines are now authorized in Canada, and whether you need one depends on your trip and your age. Talk it through with Wessam Sakr in NW Calgary.

The two chikungunya vaccines in Canada
From the Canadian Immunization Guide.
- Live vaccine
- Non-live vaccine
- Not established
Who should think about it
Chikungunya isn't found in Canada. You catch it from the bite of an infected Aedes mosquito, so the risk depends on where you're going and whether there's an outbreak there.
The vaccine may be considered for adults 18 to 64 at high risk of infection. Bring your itinerary and we'll go through it, along with the rest of your trip.
Side effects
In the studies of the live vaccine, the most common side effects were tenderness where you had the needle and a headache.
You'll wait in the pharmacy for 15 minutes after the needle. If you have an allergy to any part of a vaccine, or had a reaction to one before, tell us before you book.
