If you’re travelling to parts of Africa or South America, you may need the yellow fever vaccine — and in Canada, it can only be given at a designated Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre. Edgemont Family Pharmacy’s travel clinic is a certified Yellow Fever Centre in NW Calgary, which means we can administer the vaccine and issue the official international certificate that border officials ask for.
Here’s what to know about who needs it, how the certificate works, and how to book.
Who needs the yellow fever vaccine?
Yellow fever is a mosquito-borne viral illness found in tropical regions of Africa and Central and South America. The vaccine matters for two separate reasons:
- Protection. If your itinerary includes areas where yellow fever circulates, vaccination is the main way to protect yourself.
- Entry requirements. Many countries require proof of yellow fever vaccination to let you in — either for all travellers or for travellers arriving from countries where the disease is present. This includes some layovers: transiting through certain airports can trigger the requirement even if you never leave the terminal.
Common destinations where the vaccine is required or recommended include Brazil, Colombia, Peru, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Nigeria, and Ghana — but requirements vary by country and change over time. That’s exactly what a travel consultation is for: our pharmacists review your full itinerary against current destination requirements and tell you what applies to your trip. The yellow fever certificate (ICVP), explained
When you’re vaccinated at a designated centre, you receive an International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP) — the yellow booklet border officials check at entry. A few things travellers often don’t realize:
- Only designated centres can issue it. A regular clinic or pharmacy that isn’t a certified Yellow Fever Centre cannot give you this vaccine or the certificate. Edgemont Family Pharmacy is a designated centre, so both happen in one visit.
- It becomes valid 10 days after vaccination. Countries enforce this — a certificate issued the day before you fly won’t be accepted. Book at least two weeks before departure to be safe.
- For most travellers, one dose lasts a lifetime. Since 2016, international health regulations recognize the certificate as valid for life, so most people never need a booster. Some countries or situations are exceptions, which the pharmacist will flag during your consultation.
Keep the booklet with your passport — replacing a lost certificate is much harder than getting one issued correctly the first time.
Is the vaccine right for everyone?
The yellow fever vaccine is a live vaccine, and it isn’t appropriate for everyone. Age, pregnancy, immune conditions, certain medications, and egg allergies all factor into the decision. This is assessed individually during your consultation — if the vaccine isn’t suitable for you, the pharmacist will discuss alternatives, including whether a medical waiver letter is an option for your destination.
This is one reason yellow fever vaccination is restricted to designated centres: the screening matters as much as the injection. Bring a list of your medications and health conditions to your appointment, and talk to the pharmacist about anything you’re unsure of.
Cost and coverage
Yellow fever vaccination is a travel vaccine, so it isn’t covered by Alberta Health. At our clinic, travel consultations start at $25, with the vaccine itself charged separately — call 403-930-5806 for current pricing. Direct billing is available for many private insurance plans, and some plans reimburse travel vaccines, so it’s worth checking your coverage and keeping your receipt.
There’s no referral needed and no separate doctor’s visit — the consultation, vaccination, and certificate all happen at the pharmacy.
What else might your trip need?
Travellers who need yellow fever protection are usually heading somewhere that calls for other precautions too — hepatitis A and B, typhoid, malaria prevention, or routine boosters — and some trips require TB testing in Calgary before departure or on return. Because you’re already coming in for a consultation, it’s the natural time to sort out the whole list at once. Most travel vaccines are available on-site the same day.
Our travel clinic serves travellers headed everywhere from South America to East and West Africa, including trips for work, family visits, and volunteering — the trips that often involve longer stays and more rural travel, where prevention matters most.

Frequently asked questions
Where can I get a yellow fever vaccine in Calgary?
Only at a designated Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre. Edgemont Family Pharmacy in NW Calgary is a certified centre — no referral required.
How far in advance should I get the vaccine?
At least 10 days before entering a country that requires the certificate, since that’s when it becomes valid. Two to four weeks before departure is ideal, and it leaves room for any other vaccines your trip needs.
Do I need a booster if I was vaccinated years ago?
For most travellers, no — one dose is now considered valid for life under international health regulations. If you have your old certificate, bring it to your consultation and the pharmacist can confirm whether it still meets your destination’s requirements.
What if I can’t receive the vaccine?
Talk to the pharmacist about your situation. Depending on your health circumstances and destination, a medical waiver letter may be an option, along with strict mosquito-bite precautions.
